Grades 5 and 6

Hello!  Welcome to the fifth and sixth grade web page of Mt.
    Carmel Christian School!

Our morning begins with the first bell ringing at 8:25 a.m.!
Students are in their seats and have organized themselves
to begin a new day.  As jobs are divided among the
students for a two-week period, one of these duties
includes leading classmates to say pledges to the American
and Christian flags and to the Bible.  After reciting I
Corinthians 3:11, our school verse, another student comes
forward and records daily prayer requests.

Following a time of prayer, the academic part of our day
begins with Bible class.  At the upper elementary level, the
students begin a new in-depth study of Bible characters
with practical application to Christian living as a pre-teen.
The students enjoy learning new Scripture through oral
practice, writing, and games.  They love looking up any type
of Scripture assignment in the form of a drill, which keeps
them sharp at locating books of the Bible quickly and
    accurately!

The rest of the morning subjects are split with Mrs. Mary
Edwards, who teaches math and reading, while I teach
spelling and language.  These lessons are taught at the
individual student’s grade level.  There is a mid-morning
snack and break time before completing the remainder of
    morning classes.

Of course, lunch is always welcomed with famished
appetites, and hot lunches and bake sales are added treats
of the week for most.  The remaining room jobs are
completed after eating and before beginning the afternoon
    classes.

Our afternoon includes history and science, with the grade level of
the material alternating each year between the fifth and sixth grade
curricula.  DVD’s, experiments and other activities are incorporated
into these subjects to add to the student’s learning experience.
The day ends with an afternoon recess, which we are blessed to
spend in our spacious gym or on our wonderful playground or
soccer field.  This time is especially cherished by the sixth graders,
as it is their last year of recess times.

Some highlights of the school year include chapel on Wednesdays,
over which I frequently hear expressed sentiment and delight.  The
students also enjoy classroom parties for National Young Readers
Day, Christmas, and Valentines Day.  We traditionally attend an
instrumental concert or play in the fall, visit the Carnegie Museum
of Natural History or Science Center in the winter, and enjoy a
special end-of-the-year field trip, in which travel alternates yearly
from Lancaster to Harrisburg-Gettysburg, PA.  This spring trip
involves extra fund raising, and the students’ family members are
invited to attend, making it a memorable family event and a special
closing milestone of the elementary school years.  The year
concludes with a field day, pet day, talent show and picnic.  Sixth
grade concludes their elementary experience with a day including
the sixth grade play, selected recitations, commencement
ceremony, and a special meal together.

Other educational opportunities include participation in the annual
Christmas program, the Book-It Reading program, Top Story current
events reader, art, computer, library, a local spelling bee
competition with the opportunity to advance, and the state KCEA
academic competition.  Also, those in the sixth grade are permitted
to participate in the sports programs offered at Mt. Carmel, which
include soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track.

It is truly a pleasure to meet and get to know each new class and
individual student.  These young lives are just amazing, and I see it
as a great privilege and responsibility to work with them, while
under the direction of our wonderful Teacher, Lord, and Savior,
    Jesus Christ.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Julie Watson
