having prayer time together. Their day begins with Bible class and on Wednesday they enjoy chapel led by one of the teachers. The morning classes consisting of writing, spelling, language, and math are taught with the children separated by grades. In the afternoon they have reading classes, also separated by grade levels. One of their favorite reading times is when they read their News Current. They are learning about news in the world from a Christian viewpoint. Computer classes on Mondays are a real favorite of each of them. The history curriculum covers important historical figures from Columbus through the 20th century. The students create murals to depict some historical events that are studied. Science is especially fun when we do experiments that pertain to concepts they are studying. These two courses are taught with the two grades combined together. Health and Pennsylvania history are taught on alternate years. To end the unit on Pennsylvania history, we always enjoy a field trip to Bedford Village or Fort Necessity and Laurel Caverns. A field trip the students enjoy in the fall is going to hear the Westmoreland Symphony. Special emphasis is put on learning their times tables, presidents, states and capitals, poetry, books of the Bible, Scripture verses and the ten commandments. Individual help is given to those who may struggle in some areas. The children also learn to help one another when one is struggling. Favorites on Fridays are art and library time. The children participate in Book-It. Each month there is a contest to determine which team or individual reads the most minutes. Fourth graders do book reports and dress as the main character for one of their oral reports. Parties are enjoyed for National Young Readers' Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Book-It. Mothers plan games for these parties. A highlight at the end of the year is when the third and fourth graders put on a play and have a talent day for their parents. They also participate in Field Day. These grade levels are a fun age to teach as they are becoming more independent and are eager to learn. Mrs. Bonnie Lyga |
